Trainer Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-10-13
Trainer is a strength-training app for iPhone and Apple Watch. The App Store lists it as "Trainer – AI Gym Coach". This policy explains what data Trainer uses, where it goes, and the choices you have. We wrote it in plain language. If something is unclear, email us at support@trainer.fyi.
1. Who we are
Trainer is operated by Avia Chen, an independent developer based in Israel ("we", "us"). We are responsible for the personal data described here.
2. The short version
- You can use Trainer without an account. Your workouts then stay on your device and in your private iCloud.
- Signing in with Apple starts a backup copy of your training on our servers. You can pause it or delete it. Signing in also lets you use the AI coach and the social features.
- The AI coach sends data to our AI providers only after you give permission.
- We do not sell your data. We do not use it for advertising. We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- Health data is never sold and never used for advertising or marketing.
- You can export your data and delete your account from inside the app. See Delete your account.
3. What we collect, and why
3.1 Data that stays with you (device and your iCloud)
Your exercises, routines, programs, workouts, sets, goals, body-weight entries, progress photos, and chat history with the coach are stored on your device. If iCloud is on, Apple syncs them through your private iCloud database. That copy sits in your Apple Account. We cannot read it.
3.2 Anonymous usage and diagnostics (everyone, from first launch)
- Usage events through TelemetryDeck: facts such as "a workout started" or "onboarding finished", with counts and durations. A finished workout sends its totals: the kind of workout, its length, the number of sets, exercises, and records, your streak, and the total volume lifted. We never send exercise names, the weight of a single set, notes, or anything you type.
- Stability diagnostics from Apple's MetricKit: crashes, hangs, slow launches, and heavy use of the processor or the disk. Trainer sends a short summary of each one through TelemetryDeck. For a crash, the summary is the signal and the exception type. For the others, it is the kind of problem and one number, such as a duration. It does not send stack traces.
- Technical details with each event: device model, iOS version, app version, language and region, time zone, screen size, and accessibility settings such as text size.
- These events carry an anonymous identifier. It comes from the identifier Apple gives to a developer's apps on your device, and it is hashed on your device before it is sent. It is not linked to your name, email, or account.
Trainer has no switch for these events.
3.3 Your account (when you sign in with Apple)
- Email address. If you choose "Hide My Email", we receive only Apple's relay address. We use it to run your account and to reply to you. We also get an email notice when a new account is created.
- Name, if Apple shares it. Trainer keeps it on your device and suggests it as your display name. Our servers store it only if you save it in a social profile.
- Account ID, which we create to link your data across your devices.
3.4 Your coaching profile
When you are signed in, Trainer keeps a copy of your coaching profile on our servers, so it stays the same on all your devices. This includes the facts the coach has confirmed with you: your goals, schedule, preferences, background, limitations, standing instructions, nutrition phase, and aerobic target. We keep the earlier versions of each fact too.
3.5 Social features (optional)
If you set up a social profile, we store your username, display name, avatar, and privacy setting. We also store who you follow, the workout summaries you share, photos you post, cheers, comments, challenges, blocks, and reports. A workout summary has the workout name, its length, sets, volume, effort, personal records, the top set of each exercise, and the result of a bet that the coach made on a set. Trainer can also post a streak milestone. A post has no location.
A new profile starts private: signed-in members can find your username by exact search, but only followers you approve can see your activity. If you make it public, signed-in members can see your profile and activity. Two settings start off. You can change each one in Settings > Account & Social:
- "Share workouts to feed" posts a summary to your followers when you finish a workout. You can also keep a single workout private from the finish screen.
- "Share my step count" shows your weekly step count on your profile. Your step count is not sent to our servers. We store only the position of the switch.
Profiles made with an early test version keep the settings they had then.
3.6 Server backup (on when you sign in)
When you sign in, Trainer keeps a private copy of your training on our servers. It can bring your data back after a reinstall or on a new phone. The copy holds your exercises, routines, programs, training blocks, goals, saved coaching notes, and training profile. It holds your completed workouts and sets (up to 1,500 workouts), and your body weight, from the last 24 months. It includes workouts and body weight that Trainer imported from Apple Health. It does not include photos, chat history, steps, sleep, or heart rate.
You control this copy in Settings > Data & Sync:
- Turn off Back up to server to pause the backup on this phone. The last copy stays on our servers.
- Tap Delete server copy… to remove the copy from our servers. This also disconnects Claude.
This copy is also what the optional Claude connector reads (section 6).
3.7 AI coach usage records
For each AI request, we record your account ID, the feature, the provider, the model, token counts, cost, timing, and whether it worked. We also keep a daily total of your requests, tokens, and cost. We do not store the content of your prompts or of the replies. We use these records to enforce daily limits, control cost, and fix errors.
3.8 Notifications
If you allow notifications, we store your device's push token with your account. We use it to send:
- alerts about people you follow: a finished workout, a new follower, cheers, and comments. Each one has a switch in Settings > Account & Social;
- alerts from connections you set up, such as a proposal from Claude or a food entry;
- service announcements;
- reminders to train, if you opt in.
Apple delivers these messages, so their text passes through Apple.
3.9 What we do not collect
We do not collect your location, contacts, calendar, browsing history, or advertising identifier. Trainer does not use the camera or the microphone. We do not ask for your age or date of birth.
3.10 This website
trainer.fyi sets no cookies and has no analytics and no forms. Our hosting provider processes your IP address to deliver the pages.
4. Apple Health
Trainer asks before it reads or writes Apple Health data, and you choose each data type. Trainer on iPhone works without any of them. A workout that you start on Apple Watch needs Health access.
What Trainer reads:
- workouts, active energy, step count, body weight, and walking, running, cycling, and swimming distance;
- heart rate. Trainer asks for it on iPhone and on Apple Watch, and uses it on Apple Watch during a workout;
- last night's sleep, only if you turn on Sleep for Readiness in Settings > Apple Health;
- exercise minutes, only if you set the Aerobic widget to Apple Exercise Minutes.
What Trainer writes:
- your completed workouts, with their active energy and distance, and with heart rate from Apple Watch;
- the body weight you log in Trainer.
What happens to this data:
- Sleep figures never leave your device. The coach is told only a conclusion, for example "sleep was short last night".
- Step counts and heart rate never reach our servers. During a workout, Apple Watch shows your live heart rate on your iPhone, and Apple Health stores it with the workout.
- Workouts and body weight that you import from Apple Health become part of your Trainer history. They sync through your private iCloud database, and they are included in the server backup (section 3.6).
- The AI coach receives summaries, such as your readiness, weekly exercise minutes, active energy, and the name and length of imported workouts (section 5).
Our Health data promise: we never sell Health data. We never use it for advertising, marketing, or data mining. We never share it with data brokers. We use it only to run your training features. You can revoke access at any time in the Health app.
5. The AI coach
The AI coach needs a connection and a signed-in account. Trainer names the AI providers and asks for your permission before the coach sends anything to them.
Who processes it. AI requests go from the app to our server, and then to Anthropic (Claude models) or xAI (Grok models). If a request to xAI fails, our server sends it to Anthropic instead. Our server sends each request with its own key. Providers do not receive your email address or account ID.
What a request can contain. Only what the feature needs:
- your workouts, sets, exercises, routines, programs, training blocks, and goals;
- what you tell Trainer about a session: ratings, notes, your energy check-in, and the reason you skipped an exercise;
- your training profile: the name you gave the coach, sex (if you set it), experience, equipment, "about me" text, and standing instructions, including injuries or limitations you told us about;
- facts and notes the coach saved about you, such as your schedule, preferences, and nutrition phase;
- summaries from Apple Health, as described in section 4;
- your body weight, for the weekly review and for block planning;
- recent messages in the chat, and any photo you attach to a message. Photos go to Anthropic only;
- the language you use Trainer in.
How providers may use it. The providers use your request to write the reply, and they can check it for abuse. Their published API terms say that they do not use this content to train their models. Each provider also says that it deletes the content within 30 days, unless safety or the law requires a longer time. Read Anthropic's Commercial Terms, Anthropic's retention notice, and xAI's Enterprise Terms.
Accuracy. AI replies can be wrong. They are not medical advice. See our Terms of Use.
Your choice. You can turn the AI coach off with Use AI coach in Settings > AI Coach. Signing out also turns it off. The choice is stored on your device, so set it on each device you use. Everything else in Trainer keeps working.
Form Check (optional video analysis)
Form Check scores the technique of one set from a short video. It is optional. It needs a signed-in account, and Trainer asks for your separate permission before it sends your first video.
Who processes it. The app sends the video to our server. Our server sends it to Google (Gemini API), which is a different provider from the AI coach providers above. Google receives the video, the exercise name, and the length of the clip. It does not receive your email address or account ID.
Why. Google analyzes the video to score your form and write notes. We use it for nothing else.
How long Google keeps it. Our server deletes the video from Google right after the analysis. If the first delete fails, it tries once more. If both fail, Google deletes the file automatically within 48 hours. Our server keeps the video in memory only while it forwards it. We never store it. The score and notes stay on your device.
How Google may use it. Google's Gemini API Additional Terms apply to the video. Read them for how Google handles content, including checks for abuse.
What we record. For each check, we keep the date, the result, the model, and the timing. We do not keep the video, the score, or the notes. These records also count your three checks each week.
Your choice. Form Check sends nothing until you agree and choose a video. Everything else in Trainer keeps working without it.
6. Who else receives your data
We share personal data only with service providers that help us run Trainer, and only for that purpose:
| Provider | What it does | Data it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | Sign in with Apple, iCloud sync, Apple Health, push notifications | As Apple's services require |
| Supabase | Our database, sign-in, and file storage, hosted in Seoul, South Korea, and our server functions | Account, social, coaching profile, backup, AI usage records |
| Anthropic and xAI | AI coach | AI requests (section 5) |
| Google (Gemini API) | Form Check video analysis | The Form Check video, the exercise name, and the clip length (section 5). Only after your separate permission. |
| TelemetryDeck | Anonymous product analytics | Usage events and diagnostics (section 3.2) |
| Resend | Email delivery to us | For a new account: the email address, the sign-up time, part of the account ID, and the name if we have it |
| Cloudflare | Delivers exercise demo videos, and carries Claude connector traffic | Your IP address and the request |
| Vercel | Hosts this website and the sign-in page for the Claude connector | Your IP address and the request |
Where your data is processed. Our database is in Seoul, South Korea. Our providers process data in the United States, the European Union, and other countries. When you use Trainer, your data moves to those countries.
Connections you choose. If you connect Trainer to your own Claude account (Claude Connect), Claude reads your server backup under your account with Anthropic, and Anthropic's own terms apply. Claude can propose changes. Nothing changes in Trainer until you tap Apply. We keep a record of each connector request, without its content.
The MacroFactor food shortcut is set up on request only. If you use it, our server stores the food entries that Claude prepares for you (the name, the nutrients, and your wording) until 30 days after they are logged. It also stores your nutrition totals for the current day.
We may also disclose data if the law requires it, to protect people's safety, or as part of a merger or sale of the business. If a sale happens, this policy continues to apply to your data.
7. How long we keep data
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Device and iCloud data | Until you delete it or delete the app. You control this copy. |
| Account, coaching profile, social data, server backup | Until you delete it or delete your account |
| The record of each AI request and of each Claude connector request | 90 days, then deleted automatically |
| Daily AI usage totals | Until you delete your account |
| Form Check video | Not stored by us. Deleted from Google right after analysis. If both delete tries fail, Google deletes it within 48 hours. |
| Form Check usage records (date, result, model, timing) | Until you delete your account |
| Push tokens | Until you sign out or delete your account, or until Apple reports the token as no longer valid |
| Analytics events | Under TelemetryDeck's retention policy. They are not linked to you. |
8. Your choices and rights
Export. Go to Settings > Data & Sync > Export My Data. You get a JSON file of your exercises, routines, workouts, goals, programs, and body weight. For a copy of the data on our servers, email support@trainer.fyi.
Correct. You can edit your profile and training data in the app at any time.
Turn things off. You can turn off the AI coach, the server backup, step sharing, workout sharing, Apple Health access, and notifications at any time.
Delete. See the next section.
Ask us. Wherever you live, you can ask for a copy of the data we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it. Email support@trainer.fyi.
9. Delete your account
You can delete your Trainer account at any time. It is free.
In the app:
- Open Settings, then Account & Social.
- Tap Delete Account, then Continue.
- Sign in with Apple again to confirm that it is you.
By email: if you cannot use the app, email support@trainer.fyi from the email address on your account and ask us to delete it. We may need to confirm your identity first.
What is deleted: your account, profile, posts, photos, comments, cheers, follows, reports you made, coaching profile, server backup, AI usage records, connector records, and push tokens. Deletion of your server data starts at once and normally finishes in seconds. It is complete within 30 days. Copies in our database backups are gone within 7 days after the deletion finishes.
What we keep: a minimal record (your account ID and the dates) to show that the deletion finished.
What stays with you: data on your device, in your iCloud, and in Apple Health stays under your control. Delete the app, or remove Trainer's data in iOS Settings, to erase it.
10. US state privacy rights (including California)
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- know what personal data we hold about you and get a copy;
- correct it;
- delete it;
- opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal data, and of targeted advertising;
- not be treated differently for using these rights.
We do not sell or share personal data as those laws define it, and we do not do targeted advertising. We use sensitive data, such as health data, only to provide the features you ask for.
In the last 12 months we collected the categories in sections 3 and 4: identifiers, account and contact details, health and fitness data, user content, and anonymous usage data. We collected them from you, your device, and Apple Health, for the purposes in this policy.
To make a request, email support@trainer.fyi from the email address on your account, or use the in-app tools in sections 8 and 9. We may need to confirm your identity. You may use an authorized agent. If we refuse a request, you can appeal by replying to our answer.
11. Children
Trainer is not for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you think a child under 13 has given us data, email support@trainer.fyi and we will delete it.
12. Security
We protect data in transit with encryption. Our database restricts each account to its own data, and to the social content that other people chose to share with it. Only a small number of administrators can access server data, and only to run the service and to review reports. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
13. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the effective date above. If a change is important, we will also tell you in the app before it takes effect.
